When two (or more) subjects are joined by and, they are called a compound subject. Compound subjects can cause subject-verb agreement errors when writers incorrectly think of the compound subject as a single unit and therefore use a singular verb. Compound subjects, however, are always plural and therefore must use plural verbs.
